End of summer fun

End of summer fun

A pink elephant visited the Anderson household this weekend. A little something called “back to school”.  Jamie, Arianna and I all started back to school yesterday. The start of school means the end of summer. And the end of summer means back to business as usual.

Have you ever noticed that it’s easy to lose sight of your goals when things change?  Or when life gets busy? Or when things don’t go as planned?

When life happens, that doesn’t mean your goals have to suffer.

Here’s today’s tip and it’s pretty short.

Reserve at least 15 to 30 minutes each day to work on your goals.

This can be time you set aside first thing in the morning (if you’re a morning person), on a duty free lunch break or in the evening when you’re winding down.

We’re all busy. But it doesn’t matter how busy you are. If you are not working on changing your future, your future will not change. And if it does change, you probably won’t have as much control over it as you like. But you can use strategies to identify things that are both important (they mean a lot to you) and urgent (time-bound). These strategies will help you identify different pathways that lead to achievement of your goals.

I want to challenge you.

The challenge is to make a commitment with yourself complete an action this week that will move you closer to one of your goals. It can be an expansion on a former goal, something related to what you’re doing now, or something completely new to you.

Once you have your goal, then fill in the blank below:

This week I will ____________________________.

When you have your goal picked out, then take the following steps:

  1. Write down how much time it takes to complete that task.
  2. Consider any tasks you need to take prior to taking this specific action.
  3. Think about anything that could derail your plan to accomplish this task.
  4. Come up with a contingency plan to increase your chances of successfully completing that action.
    (“if __________ happens, then I will ____________________”)
  5. Then open your iCal or your planner, and schedule that priority action onto your schedule.

This is part of the step-by-step action planning process I take clients through to flesh out goals.

Talk soon,
Thomas

P.S. I do realize that without a clear picture of where you want to go, this task could be time consuming. If you need more focus and direction, email me at t_anderson@teaiiano.com about introductory coaching.
