In Week 3, you read about the importance of HABs as support stuctures to goal acceleration. And last Tuesday, we discussed how crystallized plans reflect your dreams. This week I want to talk more about the support structures that you’re building against the backdrop of your long-term goals to bring achievement in the short term.
Take a look at the cityscapes of New York over the past 140 years.
What do you see?
Among the things that stand out, you probably noticed that the amount of skyscrapers increased. And their heights grew over time. But do you know why the volume and height of the skyscrapers increased especially between the first and second pictures? It was due to a technological advancement credited to Henry Bessemer and commercialized by Andrew Carnegie.
That advancement was the mass production of steel.
Until this time, steel was used to make smaller household items like forks. But when Carnegie began mass producing steel, it proved to be a game-changer.
Wesley Fenlon of How Stuff Works puts it like this “once architects began using iron and steel in construction, they were able to build taller, stronger structures without relying on thick, heavy stone walls for support.” The heavy support structures limited the height to which builders could construct their buildings. That’s the reason New York’s skyline looked the way it did so early on.
Another reason is due to the foundation of bedrock under the city. That natural resource of bedrock provided ample support for the heavy steel skyscrapers.
There are many takeaways here. I would like to apply 2 to your plan to achieve your personal, professional and business goals.
Takeaway #1: Support Your Goals with a Solid Foundation
One of the biggest issues regarding goals is commitment. One way to increase your determination to hang in there when times get tough is to make sure your goals align with your God-given destiny. With the things that you know (usually in your gut) that you’re supposed to be doing in life. An inner knowing of sorts. For instance, you may have certain skills that you apply on your current job. And you do these things on a regular basis. But you have a desire to one day do these things in a different context. Let me ask you:
- What are those things?
- How are you doing them right now?
- How do you want to change the way that you do those things in the next 3 to 5 years?
Last night, I had a conversation with my music group. I told them that I was resigning as of Oct 2015. We talked for a few minutes as I shared my plan to pursue my career in coaching and consulting full-time, as my degree program is coming to a close. They started to get it. But it didn’t click for either of us until I said, “I’ve been doing this for over 25 years”. Someone said “oh yeah! It’s time. It’s almost like you’re retiring.” Finally! Someone got it. But I’m not retiring to never return again. I’m wayyyyy too young for that. I’m “retiring” from full-time musicianship. But I’m taking all the coaching, consulting, team building and leadership skills I’ve built over the last 25 years and converting those skills into my new career. That’s the foundation of what I’m building. Those key skill mix and personality that are unique to me. That foundation is anchored in God’s purpose and destiny for my life.
Takeaway #2: Use Materials Strong Enough to Support Big Goals
Did you know that the tallest building in the world is more than 2,700 feet tall?
That’s over half a mile!
And it’s built in the middle of the desert (engineers were able to reproduce the effect of New York’s bedrock foundation in the middle of Dubai). It’s made of over 400,000 cubic yards of concrete and over 35,000 metric tons of steel. Steel contains the superior structural properties that make it ideal for supertall building construction.
My coaching process for your goals gives you a structure that is the steel of goal setting. I guide you through a process to define vision and goals that flow from your God-given design, destiny, dreams and desires. My process is unique in that it incorporates one of the only processes that has been uniquely designed around helping people to decipher their God-given destiny, design, dreams and desires. Building structure around these things increases my clients’ success rates. How? Because they set goals that reflect who they are and what they want in the future. These are goals they more easily commit to.
If you want to tap into a more solid foundation and increase commitment to your goals, let’s talk. I don’t expect you to commit right away. That’s why I let you test drive my services through introductory coaching starting at just $65.00 for a half-hour session. Email me at t_anderson@teaiiano.com to set up a free coaching preview.
